Makena is a quiet fishing village on the southwestern shore of Maui. Beyond the activity of Kihei and the beautiful resorts of Wailea lies Makena; laid back, relaxed and quiet. There has been very little development of this area of the island and it preserves a great deal of old Hawaii charm.
Makena is an exceptional destination for the refined traveler who is looking for less stimulation and more relaxation and privacy. The beaches here are less crowded and more secluded than other parts of the island. The area is surrounded by rugged hills and lava fields that offer the visitor a sense of untamed nature. Just offshore lie beautiful reefs teeming with fish, turtles, dolphins and other wildlife. The snorkeling and diving in Makena are exceptional.
The northern end of Makena borders Wailea and all of the resort activities and fun available there. The village ends to the south at Makena State Park and a large marine wildlife preserve and the lava fields of La Perouse Bay.
Makena is home to the Maui Prince Hotel and it's associated restaurants and amenities. The Makena Golf Courses hold Golf Digest's 4 Star rating and are among the finest in the world. Adjacent to the golf courses is an excellent tennis club.
